Charlie Sheen did not claim the pharmaceutical industry has developed a cure for AIDS but the government is “covering it up,” despite a false report from a website known for peddling wild conspiracy theories. Gossip Cop looked into the story and we’ve exclusively learned the actor never made such an accusation.
The site YourNewsWire claims Sheen attacked Big Pharma at a recent event in New York City to promote his latest movie, 9/11. The outlet doesn’t mention when or where this supposed event took place but insists Sheen told the crowd in attendance that the government is hiding the cure for AIDS to continue making money off the treatment of the disease. The blog quotes the HIV-positive actor as having said that the nation’s leaders are out to protect “the most ingenious criminal cartel of all time, the pharma racket.”
According to the unreliable site, Sheen further stated, “Our foul, stinking government is just covering up [the cure]. They are covering up this cure because there is no money in cures. I’m taking a whole galaxy of pills multiple times daily, a cornucopia of toxic drugs to keep myself alive. Do you have any how much this stuff costs?” The actor is also cited as having said, “I’m not asking for sympathy here, guys. I’m a lucky, lucky, lucky man. I can afford it. But how many other people can afford these prices? We’re talking half a million dollars over a lifetime. Half a million dollars straight into Big Pharma’s pockets.”
Of course, had Sheen actually went on a public rant accusing the government and pharmaceutical companies of hiding the cure for AIDS, it would have made worldwide headlines. Peculiarly, however, YourNewsWire is the only outlet reporting the alleged incident. Regardless of how unlikely the site’s story seems, Gossip Cop still checked in with a source close to Sheen, who exclusively assures us he never made any of the aforementioned statements. We’re told all the quotes attributed to the actor in the article have been made-up.
